This story behind this is really sweet. My friend Evvan commissioned this quick illustration as a Christmas present for his Dad. The illustration is of an important scene in a book his Dad just finished writing.

This is my ‘pen and spit’ style. I was particularly pleased with the harbor area. I wanted the effect of all sorts of buildings and containers and …busy… but certainly didn’t want to draw it all. I use the cheapest gel pens I can find. The ink doesn’t dry fast in the el cheapos and I can get great smeary effects. Unfortunately I go through them pretty quickly but as they cost about .45 each it’s not that big a deal. I touch the feet of Alvaro Castagnet, who is the master of creating the illusion of something when nothing is there (if you don’t know his work, check him out, he is an absolute genius painter).
