Out in the National Forest in Sedona Arizona. I used to go for long hikes with my sketchbook, find a spot in the shade¬†and draw. This was one of those ancient, elegant juniper trees thats at least 600 years old, all gnarly and still. I didn’t want to draw all the needles (I’m lazy) but I wanted to catch the sense of the tree, so the pen and wash method was perfect (yes, actually spit, but that sounds so tasteless; although it’s a lot less to carry when you’re on a hike). I like it when I can simply indicate what I’m looking at and I pull it off. It adds so much mystery.
